Tokyo Revengers
Tokyo Revengers

Tokyo Revengers is one of the best anime of the year. These great shows are perfect for fans of the series.

Tokyo Revengers was one of the standout anime shows that premiered during the spring season in April 2021. The manga on which it is based began in 2017 and it is planned to end soon. That is good news for anime fans because it means there shouldn’t be a long wait between seasons before everything is wrapped up.

While fans wait for the anime, and the manga, to end there are plenty of other shows to check out as well. Tokyo Revengers can be broken down into two basic categories. One revolves around street toughs in high school with brawling action and a slice of life comedy. The other is time travel. What anime shows fall into one or both of those categories?

Updated on December 20, 2021, by Ritwik Mitra: Tokyo Revengers is one of the most unique and interesting anime to come out this year. The idea of a time-traveling delinquent trying to avert a tragic fate for his ex-girlfriend and her brother makes for a unique and engaging show that is bound to keep viewers on the edge of their seats. Here are some other anime that fans of Tokyo Revengers should definitely check out as well!

My Hero Academia is one of the most popular shonen anime right now. Given the developments that have occurred in Season 5, fans can't wait to see how the show will progress from this point onward.

Watching Midoriya transform from a fledgling superhero into a worthy successor of One for All makes him a powerful superhero indeed. Only time will tell how his story will clash alongside that of Shigaraki.

People who love a show about high school delinquents will find Yu Yu Hakusho to be right up their alley. The series features a student who saves his life to help a child, only to come back to life as a Spirit Detective instead.

Yu Yu Hakusho features some iconic shonen moments, with the Dark Tournament arc being the best of the bunch. It might not have aged all that gracefully, but it's still a brilliant title for fans of Tokyo Revengers to check out.

Bungo Stray Dogs is a great anime that takes the concept of supernatural powers and weaves them into a modern setting. This leads to some amazing battles as characters duke it out in modern and familiar environments.

The protagonist, Atsushi, is a weretiger with amazing powers of his own. He's the beating heart of the show and one of the biggest reasons why so many people love Bungo Stray Dogs.

It's always satisfying to watch a person down on his luck get amazing powers and become a force to be reckoned with. This is precisely what happens to Shinichi in Parasyte: The Maxim.

Be warned that the show is not for the faint of heart, with ample amounts of gore and body horror present in the title. The relationship formed between Migi and Shinichi is surprisingly riveting and makes for one of the best parts of the show.

Speaking of brutal and gory shows, it's impossible to not mention Gantz. The mind-bending series features a plot that is surprisingly engaging, coupled with some great characters to keep things interesting all the way to the very end.

The iconic fights of Gantz coupled with the flippant manner in which characters are done away with make for one of the best and most entertaining shows of all time. As a result, Gantz is easily one of the most engrossing watches on this list.

Great Teacher Onizuka is about an ex-Yakuza member who stumbles his way into teaching children. He may not be a delinquent himself anymore, but he still uses silly tactics to get the job done. Even though he comes across as crass, Onizuka has a heart of gold and genuinely cares about his kids.

It takes a while for everyone to warm up to him but that’s part of the fun of the show. The tender moments are sweet but so is watching the vice principal’s beloved car get totaled repeatedly.

Mob Psycho 100 follows a seemingly ordinary high school student who happens to have psychic powers. He looks unremarkable and people treat him that way even though he is probably the strongest psychic in the world.

The anime begins with rival schools duking it out in psychic battles before things move on to a bigger scale. There are only two short seasons of the anime but the manga is a bit longer and it’s done as well.

Cromartie High School is a slapstick comedy that is presented as a Sunday comic strip. Each episode has several skits which sometimes tie together thematically.

The comedy comes into play given the juxtaposition of the street toughs looking cool but behaving like nerds or total goofs. It’s a dramatically different feel than Tokyo Revengers but both do feature delinquents so fans still may enjoy checking it out.

Future Diary, at its core, is similar to the film Battle Royale. The god of this anime is dying and has chosen a group of people to compete for his position. Whoever comes out on top will ascend to the heavens as the next god.

Everyone is armed with a phone that can predict the future in various ways. That’s one element of the anime but there is more to it than that. Going any further will spoil things but rest assured this anime is worth it.

Steins;Gate is similar to Future Diary in that phones play a pivotal role in the plot. After various experiments, a group of scientists discovers they can send texts back to the past in order to change the course of time.

This series began as a light novel in 2009 before getting this anime adaptation l in 2012. Since then there have been sequels, prequels, spinoffs, games, and more. It’s a wide-reaching series but starts first with this initial anime.

Eden of the East starts off with Saki visiting the White House on her Japanese trip. She soon discovered a naked man, Akira, and the two get wound up in a plot involving espionage.

Akira has lost his memory but it seems like he can time travel. How does he do it and for what reason? That’s the core mystery of this short, but thrilling mystery anime. For those interested, there are also sequels to Eden of the East.

Erased has a plot very similar to Tokyo Revengers. The main character, Satoru, goes home one day to discover his mom had been murdered. This transports him back in time for some reason when he was a child.

Satoru has to solve some mysteries in his past in order to prevent his mother’s murder from taking place. As always there is a lot more to it than that such as love slowly blooming on the schoolyard. What else can Satoru change in the future or will it end sadly?

Dr. Stone is sort of a time-traveling anime but instead of going back to the past, human civilization fast-forwards thousands of years into the future. One day a giant virus covered earth and everyone was turned into stone.

This preserved their bodies and didn’t actually kill them though. One by one, they are recovering consciousness. Now it’s up to a budding group of teenage scientists to rebuild society. Not everyone us for this plan though so as always, conflicts ensue.

The Girl Who Leapt Through Time is a movie and not an episode-based anime. Time traveler fans will love it though. The premise is in the name as it sees the female heroine, Makoto, slowly discovering her ability to time travel.

At first, she uses it to fix small mistakes at school like bad cooking. This eventually leads to a wild plot involving someone else with the power as well. Going any further would spoil things but it is certainly a movie with plenty of twists.

The beginning premise of Your Name sees two high school students swapping bodies. They’re different genders as well which leads to a lot of comedy. It’s not an ordinary body swap film either. To speak about Your Name’s true plot would be a spoiler.

Suffice it to say if it made it on this list then sort of time or warping ability must be involved. That hint alone may be too much, but without saying anything more, this movie is highly recommended as it was nominated for many awards when it came out.
